This is part of a global anti-malaria movement that seeks to make malaria history! Visit the ELCA website ... www.elca.org ... and find out about the Malaria Campaign.

Spirituality of Children

We know that as a child grows and develops into a young adult, their spirituality and relationship with God develops as well. How does Sunday school and our Christian education programs support these children as they live out their baptism and grow in faith?

For this workshop, we are excited to welcome Dr. Pat Fosarelli from the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St. Mary's Seminary to present about the Spirituality of Children, and how their spiritual development connects with their overall development.

The afternoon of this workshop will then be spent thinking about how we do Christian education and Sunday school, hear about some different models and curricula, and discuss some best practices for living this out in the church.

LTSG ... Getting Greener Faithfully in April Spring Convocation for Church Leaders

Gettysburg Seminary will look at stewardship of the environment, green movements in theology and explore the state of eco-theology in its annual Spring Convocation held on campus April 17-18, 2012.

In this two day event in which lectures and workshops are free and open to the public, Gettysburg Seminary partners with GreenFaith, Interfaith Partners for the Environment, to present lectures by renowned scholar/practitioners in the field of eco-theology. Nationally known presenters include GreenFaith's Fletcher Harper, New Testament scholar David Rhoads of Lutherans Restoring Creation (www.lutheransrestoringcreation.org), theologian Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, and Gettysburg Seminary's Gilson Waldkoenig. An array of workshops offered on Wednesday April 18th will supply practical applications for ministries that serve the care of creation.

The two day event is geared toward church leaders, ordained and lay, interested in examining faithful stewardship of the environment through the lenses of scripture, theology, ethics, justice, worship and congregational practice. The seminary will also feature its most recent greening projects.

The setting for Wednesday Eucharist will be the "Of Land and Seasons Liturgy" in a newly updated version by Stephen and Beth Folkemer. For details about all presenters, visit the Seminary website: www.ltsg.edu/springconvo

Lutheran Summer Music Benefits Musicians and Congregations

For 31 years, Lutheran Music Program has produced the Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival (LSM), a four-week residential training and performance program for gifted high school students. The 2012 academy will be on the campus of Luther College in Decorah, IA, where more than 150 students in grades 8-12 will live together in a supportive community focused on musical excellence, faith formation, and personal growth.

Both the youth who attend LSM and the congregations from which these students come benefit from investment and participation, as evidenced by recently-released results of a comprehensive national research study and the rapid growth of partnerships with Lutheran colleges nationwide.

Short-Term Benefits

Students who attend LSM improve their technical proficiency as musicians and strengthen their faith. These outcomes positively benefit congregations across the country. In July 2011, Lutheran Music Program released the results of its first-ever survey of the 2,200+ alumni who have attended LSM during the program's first 30 years. The results indicate that LSM has consistently provided an overwhelmingly positive experience for young musicians, as measured in three distinct areas: musical development, faith formation, and community building.

Mid-Term Benefits

Because of its focus on Lutheran music traditions, including the a capella choral tradition developed in American Lutheran colleges, LSM is excellent pre-college preparation for students who will go on to attend those institutions. LSM students are particularly drawn to attend colleges of the Lutheran church.

In recognition of the valuable role LSM plays in preparing youth for college, 14 Lutheran colleges now offer exclusive scholarships to LSM alumni to encourage their attendance. Called the Lutheran Collegiate Partnership, these scholarships range from $500 to $6,000 annually. Member institutions include:

Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN

Augustana College, Rock Island, IL

Concordia University, Irvine, CA

Concordia University, Seward, NE

Concordia College, Bronxville, NY

Concordia University, Portland, OR

Grand View University, Des Moines, IA

Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, NC

Luther College, Decorah, IA

Newberry College, Newberry, SC

Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA

Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN

Waldorf College, Forest City, IA

Wartburg College, Waverly, IA

Long-Term Benefits

LSM's dual purposes of musical training and faith formation have a long-term impact on alumni as well as the churches they attend. Today, the percentage of LSM alumni who attend church regularly is 35% higher than the national average. And, LSM alumni are not passive members of their congregations.

Get Involved

Lutheran Music Program seeks congregational partners to help identify talented young musicians for admission to the 2012 Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival (LSM) by joining in the Young Musicians Partnership. The Young Musicians Partnership is a growing network of congregations who establish a local scholarship of at least $500 for students to attend LSM. In doing so, the congregation receives these benefits of partnership:

10% tuition discount for all member youth.

33% match (up to $500 from LSM) to the church's scholarship.

Partner resources and a network of congregations committed to building the next generation of church musicians.

Applications for LSM 2012 are currently being accepted in all instrument and vocal areas. For more information on Lutheran Music Program and the Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival, visit www.lutheransummermusic.org, email lsm@lutheransummermusic.org or call the organization's national offices in Minneapolis toll free at 888-635-6583.

The 2012 Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival will take place June 24 to July 22 on the campus of Luther College in Decorah, IA.
