Happy 40th anniversary, Lutheran Campus Ministry in Baltimore!

Won't you join us in wishing Lutheran Campus Ministry in Baltimore a happy 40th anniversary? It was established at what was then Towson State University but has since grown to serve students at many Baltimore-area campuses, including Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and, most recently, Morgan State University.
As part of the celebration, you're invited to a gala dinner and program, set for 6 - 8 p.m., Saturday, April 23, 2005, at All Saints Lutheran Church, 4215 Loch Raven Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21218. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Cheryl T. Chatman, executive vice president and dean of diversity at Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. Previously, she served as assistant director for colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Division for Higher Education and Schools. Lutheran Campus Ministry also is celebrating the expansion of its ministry to Morgan State. The position of Morgan Outreach Coordinator will be expanded to full-time for a two-year trial period. The candidate will work with Morgan students in a Service-Learning model of community service. Working with urban Lutheran congregations, the coordinator will involve students in reflection and service at schools, churches and homeless shelters. (The complete job description is below.) Lutheran Campus Ministry at Morgan State University
Lutheran Campus Ministry is planning to expand our Morgan Outreach Coordinator position to full-time in August 2005 for a two-year trial period. We will hire a candidate to work with Morgan students in a Service-Learning model of community service. Working with urban Lutheran congregations the coordinator will involve students in reflection and service at schools, churches and homeless shelters. In those relationships students will learn about the Lutheran Church. Bachelor Degree Required. Salary and full-benefits commensurate with experience. Applications accepted until position filled. Job Description: Outreach Through Service Learning Project Coordinator
- Bachelors or advanced degrees in field related to work
- Experience working with college students desired
- Experience working with children and at-risk populations
- Lutheran church membership preferred
- Understanding of outreach
- Willingness to invite students to Lutheran-sponsored events/worship
- Knowledge of African-American churches, needs of African-American children and familiarity with Morgan State University community
- Persons of Color encouraged to apply
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to coordinate student and church volunteers
- Creative, outgoing, self-starter able to work with minimal supervision, while working in a collegial style and functioning as part of a broader team
- Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access and email
- Ability to help members of populations served develop citizenship goals
- Good communication, public relations and community development skills
- Valid drivers license, good driving record and ability to drive van
- Respectful of religious differences and other faith communities
- Ability to work with pastors/members of supporting congregations, Lutheran Campus Ministry and Morgan Christian/Interfaith Center Staff
- Willing to have and pass criminal background check
- Recruit volunteers at campus tables twice weekly (at least 5 hours weekly)
- Prepare, present and oversee Reflections, journaling and evaluations for Service Learning
- Provide transportation to & arrange transportation to service sites, & willingly discuss faith
- Keep records of outreach and student involvement
- Provide detailed quarterly reports
- Work closely with and communicate frequently with campus pastor and advisory group
- Publicize outreach through fliers, email, newspaper, presentations to student groups
- Develop relationships with faculty, staff, students and organizations
- Work alongside student volunteers and encourage church members to do the same
- Maintain electronic address books and Access databases for record keeping and contacting students
- Encourage church members to become involved in outreach through monthly visits to congregations
- Offer students invitations to greater church and campus ministry involvement
- Assist with organizing monthly hospitality for students along with congregations
- Attend occasional weekend events with students and advisory group meetings
- Facilitate emotional, educational and spiritual development of college students and members of at-risk populations served
- Plan and organize celebrations of the Service Learning Program at the end of each semester involving students, congregations and service recipients
- Coordinate monthly advisory group meetings (9 yearly)
- Attend LCM Board Meetings as requested
