Celebrate Valentine's weekend by supporting campus ministry
Feb. 12, 2007
Over the past five years, the Delaware-Maryland Synod has been actively involved at Morgan State University through an outreach and service program. You're invited to celebrate Valentine's Day weekend by attending "A Taste of Love Dinner" in support of that expanding program.
From its beginnings with a part-time staffer about five years ago, the Morgan outreach program has grown to a full-time staff person, Reggie Price, and a contact list of about 300 students, with 100 of those contributing community service, 30 of them on a regular basis. In a city that's about 70% African American, this is a successful, intentionally multicultural program serving 18-22 year olds. In 2004, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans awarded the project a two-year, $10,000 grant to provide for a full-time coordinator. Now the Thrivent grant is running out, but the need for the outreach program continues to grow.
You can support the Morgan program and at the same time enjoy dinner and a series of performances - singing, dancing, poetry, theater - on Sat., Feb. 17, from 3-6 p.m. at Second English Lutheran Church, 5010 Briarclift Rd., Baltimore, MD 21229. Donation: $25 per person. Please make advance reservations by calling the Baltimore campus ministry office, (410)321-4484, or Reggie Price, (443)791-0074.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of campus ministry by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and its predecessor churches. Presently, ELCA campus ministry provides a presence at more than 180 state and private colleges and universities, with cooperating congregations in campus ministry at an additional 600 campuses nationwide. The centennial theme is comprised of three phrases, each emphasizing the ongoing mission of campus ministry: Expanding Minds, Deepening Faith, and Inspiring Service.
The Rev. Tanysha Williams has just begun a call to serve as campus pastor in the greater Baltimore area. Reggie Price has served as the outreach coordinator for Morgan State University since 2001.
