Liturgical scholar to present major workshop in Baltimore
"Word and Sacrament, or Joseph's Britches?" That's the question to be posed by one of America's foremost scholars on liturgy and theology as he addresses the topic of Evangelical Lutheran Worship amid the relics of popular religion. The workshop led by the Rev. Dr. Gordon W. Lathrop is set for Sat., Apr. 21, 2007, from 8:30 a.m. - 12 n. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 7910 Bel Air Rd., Baltimore, MD 21236-3775.
Dr. Lathrop will lead three sessions which explore the emergence of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's family of new worship resources within the American context. Drawing on his nearly 40 years of experience, Dr. Lathrop will make one-hour presentations on the following:
- Revival or Renewal? -- Baptism as the source of community and mission
- Decision or Pure Doctrine? -- The purposes of proclamation in worship
- Elation or Eucharist? -- Gifts of the Spirit in worship
The Rev. Dr. Gordon W. Lathrop is Charles A. Schieren Professor of Liturgy, Emeritus, at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He has been a Lutheran pastor for 38 years, 23 of which have been spent at the seminary. Among his many books are Holy Things: A Liturgical Theology (Fortress 1993); Holy People: A Liturgical Ecclesiology (Fortress, 1999); Holy Ground: A Liturgical Cosmology (Fortress, 2003); and Central Things: Worship in Word and Sacrament (Augsburg Fortress, 2005).
