Racial Justice Workshops
From Bishop Gohl:
A combined team of our Racial Justice Ministry Team, African Descent Lutheran Association and African Descent Strategy Task Force led by Pastor Patrick Gahagen (Journey of Faith, Rockdale) and Pastor Melissa Lemons (Zion, Wilmington) with staff support from Pastor Eric Campbell, have taken seriously the call I made to our rostered ministers to become more fluent in the work of racial justice. They have designed and are implementing a gathering for rostered ministers in each of the clusters of our synod over the next three months. You are asked to plan to attend one of the workshops, though it needn't be the one in your cluster territory. I will attend each one and look forward and expect to greet you there.
The workshop is an opportunity for rostered leaders of the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the ELCA to gather for the purpose of strengthening our collective and individual resolve in addressing the sin of racism. The workshop will be grounded in a Lutheran theological perspective outlining the call to confront racism; offer a deeper understanding of how race/racism operates in each other, congregations and the society at large; provide tools, opportunities and ideas of how congregations can strategically address racism in their own context; and create both accountability and collegial support as we travel an anti-racist path together.
The cost of the workshop is $24 and includes lunch as well as some resources to take with you. Registration is very basic: email Justina Sergeon with your name, the date of the workshop you will attend and whether you require any dietary accommodations (vegetarian, etc.), then pay at the door. No-shows will be billed for their registration since the costs will have been incurred.
The Workshops will be offered from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the following dates:
